Choosing the Right Coffee for a Sensitive Stomach

Choosing the Right Coffee for a Sensitive Stomach

If you love coffee but your stomach doesn't always agree, you're not alone. Coffee is naturally acidic, and certain compounds like caffeine and chlorogenic acids can trigger acid reflux, bloating, or discomfort in sensitive individuals. The good news? With a few smart choices, you can still enjoy a great cup without the side effects.

I've dealt with this myself — it took me a while to figure out which coffees worked for my stomach, and that's exactly why I wanted to write this post. If I can save you some trial and error, we're doing our job!

Why Does Coffee Upset Some Stomachs?

The main culprits are acidity and caffeine. High-acid coffees can irritate the stomach lining and trigger reflux, while caffeine stimulates acid production. Light roasts, certain origins, and some brewing methods tend to be higher in both — but there are plenty of ways to work around this.

1. Choose a Dark Roast

Contrary to popular belief, dark roasts are actually lower in acid than light roasts. The longer roasting process breaks down chlorogenic acids, making dark roast a gentler choice for sensitive stomachs. Two of our favorites for sensitive stomachs:

  • Coffee with Mushrooms Dark Roast — smooth, earthy, and easy on digestion. The added mushrooms (like chaga and lion's mane) are also known for their gut-friendly properties.
  • French Roast — bold and rich with low acidity, a classic choice for those who want full flavor without the bite.

2. Go for Low-Acid Origins

Where your coffee is grown matters. Beans from lower-altitude regions like Indonesia, Brazil, and Latin America tend to be naturally lower in acid. Try these:

  • Bali Coffee Pods — Indonesian-grown beans are renowned for their smooth, low-acid profile. Convenient pods make it easy to brew a gentle cup every morning.
  • Latin American Blend — a smooth, balanced blend sourced from Latin American regions known for producing mellow, stomach-friendly coffee.

3. Try Cold Brew

Cold brew is one of the best-kept secrets for sensitive stomachs. The cold brewing process produces up to 67% less acid than hot-brewed coffee, resulting in a naturally sweet, smooth cup. Try brewing any of our dark roasts or low-acid blends as a cold brew for an extra-gentle option.

4. Watch Your Brew Method

Your brewing method matters as much as your beans. French press and cold brew tend to be easier on the stomach. Avoid very fine grinds or high-pressure espresso if you're particularly sensitive, as these extract more of the acidic compounds from the bean.

5. Don't Drink on an Empty Stomach

Even the gentlest coffee can cause discomfort if you drink it before eating. Having a small snack or meal first creates a buffer and can make a big difference in how your stomach responds.

6. Watch Your Add-Ins

Sometimes it's not the coffee — it's what you put in it. Dairy can trigger sensitivity for some people, so try oat milk or almond milk as a gentler alternative. Avoid artificial sweeteners, which can also irritate the gut.
